“What Mike achieved in just over an hour was nothing short of miraculous.

My class were captivated from the first moment and worked hard to accomplish all the challenges and tricks offered to them; for some, this was pedalling and waving with one hand, for many this meant standing on the bike frame with one foot or balancing in a 'Titanic' pose.

They have already taken on Mike's 'I can' attitude and adapted his concepts of 'Rise Above' and 'Flearning' to all areas of the curriculum.

It was exactly what they needed, thank you.”

Amanda Ward - Assistant Head
Rackham C of E Primary

"Outstanding, is how I would describe my BMX experience. Everything about it was amazing, there is nothing I would change. It’s given me so much confidence when riding a bike, it’s crazy……. He was very inspiring and he would cheer on everyone." - Sarah Y6

‘Amazing! Mike Mullen taught me things that I didn’t believe I could do. He broke skills down in to very small steps to help us. My favourite trick that I learned was standing on the seat with one foot…’ Callum Y5
"I can’t begin to say how amazing the BMX experience was today - he was incredible and I can’t believe some of the tricks my kids did! They were standing on the seats and all sorts!

He even taught one of my class how to ride a bike whilst teaching the others and she rode one for the first time - it made me emotional!

I videoed her riding it and showed her mum after school who couldn't believe it. She'd had a meltdown last night about it and didn’t want to come to school. At the end of today she didn’t want to go to dance club because she wanted to go home to ride her bike instead!". Honestly I’m still not over it - my kids were BEAMING!!

"Mike was so inspirational to both children but also to the staff in school. Ever since his visit I've found myself asking the children 'are you opening the 'Can Do' or 'Can't Do' door?
I've also found myself far more aware of my own 'Can't Do' door before deciding to leave it firmly shut! As for the children learning BMX, well, they absolutely loved it! "

Lynne Gilbert - Hopton Primary

" Mike made me realise I have a habit of giving up and going through the I CAN'T door. Today I went through the I CAN door and passed my ballet exam! " Emma Y8
"I cannot tell you what an amazing day we all had on Tuesday - it was such a valuable experience for all of the children...and the adults loved it too! I am so thankful for your professionalism and kindness towards the children. It's amazing what they were able to achieve in a relatively short amount of time.

Obviously your tricks and stunts were incredible but I thought it was so valuable that you also showed a trick you are still learning and that you hadn't quite perfected yet - a very powerful message to the children.

We will certainly have you back again next year!"

Jen Bromley - Y6 Hockley Primary

"Danny and Charlie delivered our Inline Skating day today and were amazing! The children were buzzing, they all loved it! The assembly was fantastic as well and I didn’t expect him to do the trick he performed!

The inline skating day was really good for the year 6’s and you saw how their confidence grew during the session. An hour was about the right amount of time. Any less and it might have been rushed so timings were good. Also having 2 members of staff made a big difference as Danny could push the more able onto tougher challenges while Charlie would support the less able beginners.

Really happy with it and would like to book again for next year’s year 6’s?

"I have been involved in Education for decades now as a teacher and Head Teacher. I have attended many different workshop / presentations over the years but the one that Mike recently presented at St Edburg’s Primary School ranks as the best I have seen.

Children across the Primary age range were mesmerised by the personal story that Mike had to tell about his own lack of confidence as a child. He explained succinctly and engagingly that failure is an acceptable trait to experience and that you can learn and progress in spite of feeling that you have not succeeded initially.

This was all before the brilliant exhibition of BMX skills and the following masterclasses for the pupils to attempt riding too.

Truly awe inspiring for both children and staff"

"A truly inspirational day for all the children at Crawford's Primary, but especially for one year 5 pupil who, thanks to Mike's expertise and calm, confident manner, achieved his dream and learnt to ride a bike.

Having previously being too scared to even sit on the saddle, through Mike's mentoring, he was riding a bike within 45 minutes.
Definitely my best day at work since I started teaching! Thank you so much Mike - bikes, tricks and so much more that the pupils will never forget - they are now proud to "Flearn".

Ginny Nunn
Crawfords Primary School

"The children absolutely loved the inline skating workshops and the activities were well pitched with excellent support.

Every child I spoke to asked why they can't do it every week and many of them are asking for inline skates for Christmas!

The children felt very comfortable to ask questions and were hugely inspired by Danny's assembly.

Thanks so much again for all the experience days this year. Definitely booking again next year!"

Rosa Mitchell - Blaise Primary, Bristol

"I wholeheartedly recommend a visit from Mike for your school.  Mike has now worked with children and staff at Penn Wood on three separate occasions.  His messages about life and human beings, told in such a compelling way, are life changing!
Mike draws the community together by talking about his journey in life, showcasing his amazing skills and teaching children to bravely have a go at BMX stunts themselves.
The strength of culture when Mike is in school is tangible and he leaves an amazing legacy with us to help our personal development.  What a humble and yet truly inspirational human being he is!  He's a true BMX Champion but hasn't counted how many trophies he has!  Mike's days in school are transformational and uplifting."

Jane Girlie - Headteacher - Penn Wood Primary & Nursery School

"I just wanted to drop a quick line to say a huge, huge thank you to Danny and Charlie for the workshops they did with our Y5/6 children. Every child who took part grew in confidence throughout their time with Danny. He was amazing with them!

The assembly at the end was watched by the entire school with our headteacher eventaking part, which was brilliant.

The children who took part in the assembly were usually very low in confidence and struggle to perform in front of an audience. So it was amazing to see these children shine today.

Please pass on my gratitude to the guys. I will definitely be booking next year!"

Alison Whittingdon - Tame Valley Academy

"Mike, I can’t express how amazing today was! Everyone was raving about it. My class were so inspired and it’s fab that they could see skills they used today and how to use it in everyday life and the classroom.

It was the best assembly/workshop set up I’ve ever seen in 16 years of teaching and I can’t big it up enough : )
We will definitely be booking you again next year - buzzing!!!"

Claire Weston Y6
The Lea Primary School

"Danny and Charlie were fantastic and kept the kids so engaged. They absolutely loved it.

I was really impressed with how patient Charlie was with the non-cyclists. It's a great system you have there. I assumed the ones who couldn't ride would have to just watch.

Danny had the kids 'eating out of his hand'. The boys who I thought might be tricky, just loved him! I've never seen them pay so much attention to anything before.

I think it was best summed up by one troubled lad who moans about everything. He said it was his best day at school and turned out to be a natural and was talking to Danny about the best way to get a BMX bike. Danny has a gift with kids like him.

Definitely re-booking next year!"

Gavin Byrne - Chesham Bois CE School

"I just wanted to say thank you so much for the amazing visit from Danny and Charlie today! The year 5s had the best day and enjoyed the workshops! Lots are now asking for inline skates for Christmas!

The children learnt so much! They all went home talking about it and have definitely been inspired.

Danny, is very inspirational and was so kind and considerate to all the children and their needs. Thanks again, can we book for next year?"

Sarah Toule  - Melborn Primary, Cambridge

"It was absolutely fantastic as always! Danny and Charlie were fabulous and we have nothing but positive comments to feedback.

The children had a brilliant day and we were so proud about the kids who were really nervous about taking part.

The display at the end was brilliant and the rest of the school enjoyed watching me being jumped over ha!"

Lindsay Mann - St Michael's, Bishop Stortford

"I wanted to message as we have just had the most fantastic day with Danny and Charlie! The workshops were great fun, and it was lovely to see the children make so much progress in such a short time.

Danny and Charlie had a lovely, encouraging manner with the children and built positive relationships quickly which enabled  the children to feel comfortable and more confident in their ability. The smiles on the children's faces were huge. They had an absolutely amazing time. They also really enjoyed seeing Danny's tricks in the assembly.
"

Fran Connell Y6 - The Grange School, Banbury

"The children had an amazing day with Danny and Charlie.  The Y5/6s really enjoyed the challenge and loved the way the coaches instilled a great "can do" mindset.

The assembly was a great success too and the children (and teachers) were buzzing afterwards!"

Lily Jary  - Charles Kingsley’s Primary, Hampshire

"Thank you again for coming in to do the workshops after lockdown. It is the second time I have done it in school (and once at the P.E conference) and can honestly say it is the best workshop I have ever done in school.

The children get so much out of it and it is amazing to see the change in confidence in such a short space of time. I am going to speak to my headteacher about running the Y6 transition & BMX workshop again next year. "

Alastair Cooper - Y6 Teacher
St Andrews Primary School, Stansted Abbotts

I just wanted to email you to say what an amazing scootering workshop we had with Terry today. The assembly was inspirational and really did build on our growth mind set work, our school vision and values.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the workshops which were very well organised. During the workshops, the children were encouraged to go out of their comfort zone and persevere. Terry was excellent at building the children’s confidence and all children achieved success. What a brilliant day!

Bridget Long - Headteacher

Broad Town, Wiltshire

 "Wow, what a fantastic day!
Terry gave an incredible assembly and the scooter workshops were pitched perfectly.

Thank you so much for organising everything for our scooter experience. What an asset Terry is to your team, I couldn't have asked for a better day.

See you again next year!"

Sally Morrell - Burnham Market Primary

"What a brilliant day had by all who took part - thank you Terry!' We couldn't recommend the Scooter Workshops highly enough - they had the children hooked from start to finish, as did the trick assembly too.
Terry's approach to teaching and learning is wonderful, showing patience and positivity, calmness and kindness.
We look forward to working with you again and would like to book 3 more days in Sept"

James Dew, Birchwood Grove Primary School, West Sussex

Mike, I’d like to say a massive thank you!  Yesterday when you were at Westfield Primary, you convinced my daughter to get on a bike again.

Her teachers may have told you that she used to love riding and then nearly 2 years ago after getting a new bike for her 8th birthday, she was in a road accident when she was out riding.  A car hit her and she was thrown off her bike and landed in the middle of the road and was quite hurt.

Since then we have tried many times to encourage her to ride again without much success.  She even asked for permission to not join the session yesterday.  Starting from that position, how you talked to her and encouraged her to go back on is quite amazing.  She came home from school beaming asking for her bike again!

It’s so wonderful that she wants to ride again, thank you so much for showing her how to overcome her panic and fear.

Mrs L - Parent of Y5 child from Westfield Primary School

"
"Thank you so much for coming, sharing your vision with us and delivering such an amazing opportunity for the kids. Everyone has spoken so positively about it, children and adults alike. We’ve actually just had an assembly this morning to recap the week – we watched back your crazily impressive jumps, looked through some photos & had some of the Year 5s and 6s share their accomplishments from the workshops – they’re still buzzing!

So many of our staff team have said to me that the growth mindset approach is exactly what we as adults need to hear, too. In all, the day has really helped strengthen our school spirit – thank you!

We’re definitely interested in more of your workshops and no doubt we’ll be in touch to organise those. Thanks so much again.Take care & keep Flearning of course!"

Ms Elisa Walker The Grove Primary School

"I cannot recommend Mike and his BMX Academy enough. We have worked with him for 7 years with some of most disengaged students and students who struggle academically and/or socially.

He never fails to have the most positive impact on them and their outlook on life. He even taught a 14 year old boy to ride a bike - something he had always wanted to do but his parents had never been able to do with him.

To see that boys face realise a lifelong dream was emotional to say the least. He is such a positive role model to everyone he works with and the students just love spending time with him. Probably one of the best projects I have ever run in school"

Rob Langstone - Head of Science Imberhorne School

"The classes were both blown away by Terry's scooter workshops and his assembly / stunts, as were the adults involved! I still haven't quite got over the backflip myself!

All of the children had a superb time, Terry was able to break down each stunt/trick clearly, building towards more challenging stunts. He ensured safety was the ultimate priority and the progress made by all children in the sessions was phenomenal. I honestly saw children light up, one even shared that it was the best day of their life, I did share that with Terry at the time too.

The session was honestly brilliant. There were several children who were prepared not to engage through sheer anxiety and the fact it was something different, out of their comfort zone, and they smashed it, challenging themselves to travel over the ramp when they were scared stiff. They were buzzing from it, so thank you Terry!

I wouldn't hesitate to invite him back for a session next year. He was incredibly friendly, interacted positively with all the children and was professional too."

Claire Arnold - Home Farm Primary, Essex

“Thank you very much for the fantastic assembly and workshops today.

Every child I talked to was very impressed. The teachers were also awed by it  and the Growth Mindset talk that Terry gave was just the thing we are always talking about.

We will now be able to refer to Terry's story when we talk about resilience.”

Mrs Jiwa - Newton Farm Primary

“The week has been amazing!! The children and staff loved it.

Terry was so good with all our children, in particular our SEN children who he was able to engage and communicate with on exactly the right level.

There was such a buzz around school for the three days he was with us.”

Angela Hillier - Teacher & PE coordinator - Christ Church Primary, Cheltenham

"The children had a wonderful time on Friday and Terry was excellent with them. He was very organised and set up on the playground ready for the assembly.

His assembly was fun and engaging, it also held many positive messages that align to our school values. The structure and timings were well balanced, action, music and talk. The children did not take their eyes off him.

The group sessions were well structured too and the children all came back raving about their experience. I have taken lots of photos and videos. I will send some over.

I thanked Terry at the end of the day and let him know how well it had been received. He is a very humble and nice guy indeed while still being very professional. I would certainly welcome him back and would highly recommend the workshop to others.

"My BMX experience was amazing, I would love to do it again. I never thought I would be able to do it but I thought wrong. So I achieved" - Amanda Y5

"When I first started, I wasn’t confident but as I tried and failed I got back up and tried again. It was the best day of my life, I loved it. I felt free and happy and I didn’t even know I could do all those amazing tricks, I even surprised myself" - Tony Y4
"What a fantastic day today. Danny was amazing. The girls loved it as did all the staff and me!

It was super organised and one of the best things we have ever done.

The girls progressed so quickly, absolutley great for their confidence.

Will be definitely be re booking next year.
"

Laura Coster - Old Palace School, Croydon

"Danny and Charlie were absolutely amazing and the kids (and staff !) absolutely loved it!

Lots of positive feedback given to me throughout the day. Some teachers mentioned that Charlie was particularly good with anxious/ needy pupils and was really kind and supportive.

We would love to have you again next year."

Mandy Clifton - Newlands Spring Primary

"Mike was amazing! The whole school was buzzing yesterday!

We thought the assembly on 'Growth mindset' was just what our children needed and they were so engrossed. The workshops were fantastic and the children really enjoyed it.

The Year 4's made information posters about him in the afternoon and gave some to him. Next week the Year 6 are going to do some work on him and we are creating a growth mindset display based on yesterday.

"I just wanted to send an email to say thank you so much for the experience we had with Terry today.  All of the children thoroughly enjoyed the assembly this morning and it was a fantastic opportunity to hear about perseverance and not being afraid to fail!  Super message for everyone.  The adults loved it too and I was super brave and ended up laying by the ramp for one of the tricks!  A once in a lifetime for me!

The Year 5 children also loved their workshops.  They all came back smiling and  I think they got so much from it.  They all came back talking about wanting scooters from Christmas and about trying the tricks when they got home.  Also, I noticed lots of red, sweaty faces - so great for their level of activity in the day, as we have lots of children who need encouragement to do physical activity or spend too much time on screens - so hopefully this has inspired them to get out, try something new and push their boundaries.

Overall, a fantastic day and so much to be learnt from Terry - an inspiration. Thank you for giving us this opportunity.
"

Sarah Toule - Melbourn Primary, Cambridge

"Wow what an inspiration you are Mike.  The morning workshop I attended with the Year 6 children was nothing short of brilliant.
It was amazing if not a little scary at first to watch these children go over jumps, do the cancan and some even lifted their feet onto the handlebars.  The children were buzzing and 3 non riders were riding over the jumps with a little help at the end of it.
Then came the assembly, 45 minutes you kept a whole school enthralled with your talk on your struggles and challenges and eventually your triumphs.  It takes someone special to manage that!  I particularly liked the bit about the fact that we are all born with Growth Mindset and how we all learn to walk even though it is a struggle. Gosh why do we allow that drive to leave us?
After the assembly we were treated to 15 minutes of watching you in action on the playground.  The children and adults were gasping, clapping, oohing and ahhing especially when you jumped over 5 teachers who were laying on the ground!
Thank you for an amazing day. We look forward to welcoming you back next year"

Ruth Law
Southfiled Junior School, Highworth

"My God, our children and staff have enjoyed having you at The Grange today. You really did succeed in empowering and inspiring them.
Our beauties were full of it today - you must know that you would have changed at least one of their lives today and for that, we are forever grateful. Priceless.
Your assembly was so 'on the money' - the Year 6 boys were transfixed. Big Col (Mr Lane) loved it too. A heartfelt 'Thank you'. Do come back soon. Term 6 would be brill please!"

Bev Boswell - Head teacher
The Grange CP School

"Mike I just would like to thank you for your time, passion and inspiration .
We were truly blessed to have met you! EVERYONE in school from the youngest to the oldest have been so inspired by you.
The children have already adopted flearning!
I will definitely be in contact again to rebook."

Bets Martin - Brookside Academy

“I'm a proud father of 2 children. A 14 year old boy and a 10 year old girl. We taught my son to ride a bike when he was around the age of 4, within maybe 10-15 minutes he was up and away making cycling look easy. My daughter on the other hand has up until recently shown no interest in riding a bike, and repeated attempts to help have led to shall we say heated discussions (god help me when she wants to learn to drive a car).

Very recently the BMX Academy were invited to school to entertain her and her classmates with a day’s cycling. For my daughter this I realised was going to be a problem. Come the morning of the visit, amid tears, upset and an I’m not doing it attitude, I dropped her off at school with her cycle helmet and told her to go with the flow to see what happened.

Mike had been pre-warned by the school that one of the pupils may not be able to ride a bike, so on the day asked the question of all pupils, and when my daughter sheepishly put her hand up he called her over and then spent time, one to one I believe explaining the basics and helping her to get started. The outcome from the day was more than I could have hoped for, when I came home in the evening she was beaming with pride, and was desperate to show me how she could now ride a bike!

I phoned the school office the next day to get Mikes contact details to enable me to thank him personally, the receptionist explained that she had been looking out of the window watching my daughter riding around and the smile on her face was magical.

So thank you Mike for spending them time with a nervous pupil and teaching her the ropes, your kindness meant such a lot to her. You Sir are a superstar!”

Simon Jones - Parent (Hertfordshire)

"He made a real connection to the pupils at our school with his childhood stories which related to many of their own struggles. He spoke about his own failures and successes to give a strong message of determination and perseverance
.
His presentation, delivery and understanding of his audience was very impressive. Since the visit I see a lot of his influence around school. Staff use his idea of FLEARN in lessons and refer to his example of growth mindset to improve.
Pupils catch me around school to talk about tricks they have learnt or ideas they have for events linked to Mike's visit. I would recommend Mike to other schools without any hesitation. "

Sean Ambrose - Pot Kiln Primary School

"For me, hands down the best school visitor I've ever seen! The kids and all of us loved it!

The real WOW moment for me though was, yesterday when one of our more challenging students was on the verge of a moment, his words were "what would Mike do?" How fantastic is that!

It was everything I could have asked from the day and fitted beautifully into our school values."

Carole Carter - Head - Sowe Valley Primary School

"I thought Mike was coming to school to give the pupils an incredible BMX experience, which indeed he did and it generated a lot of buzz around the school beforehand. However, he delivered far more than I was expecting for our pupils and me. Mike’s delivery about Growth Mindset in his assembly made more sense than any course I’ve ever been on or any book I’ve ever read about it before.
At first, the pupils cheered and whooped from the moment he began talking, excited by his stunts and achievements, videos and photos, but they were utterly mesmerised when he talked about how he first failed. And then failed again. And again.
He not only spoke to the children about choosing to say “I can” and taking control of their choices, he demonstrated it first hand, and then empowered them, every single one of them, to do the exact same thing as they took their turns on their bikes. He used techniques and language that I will be using with the children in class tomorrow and everyday from now on.
Today was a profound, powerful learning opportunity for our pupils and staff. "

Laura Miller - Wincham Primary

"As a teacher I've seen so many different people come in from outside to do assemblies and work with the children and Mike’s is easily up there as one of the best.

Mike’s story is a great inspiration for the children and it perfectly embodies what we're trying to foster in the children - an ability to believe in yourself, embrace your mistakes, dig in deep when you need to and all the while being mindful."

Adrian Bethune - Author of ‘Wellbeing in the Primary Classroom’
Teacher at Westfield Primary School

"Thanks so much. The children absolutely loved the workshops today. So many of them are now keen to get bikes themselves- their parents will love us!!!

Seriously, your message is so clear and so good. And the way you deliver it is supportive, whilst challenging children to have a go. I loved how inclusive you were too- thank you.

Hope to see you or one of your other champions at St Paul's next year "

Sarah Smith Y6 - St Paul's Primary School

"We recently had Mike Mullen from BMX Academy visit our school with a view of teaching about growth mindset through BMX. The day was absolutely incredible! The intial assembly that Mike lead for several groups was inspiring and fun. The children loved his BMX tricks but really absorbed the idea of 'I can't do it YET'.

The work that children did learning to ride a BMX was also amazing. I could not believe the number of skills Mike managed to teach the children in a short period of time while conintuing to reinforce his message about a growth mindset.

All in all, it was an incredible experience and I will certainly look to have BMX academy back in school in the future. What an incredible day and I can not recommend them enough.
Thank you!"

Steve Moran - Godwin Primary, Dagenham, Essex

"Mike created empathy effortlessly from staff and pupils in and beyond his Assembly. We all loved the tricks demonstrated outside, including 6 staff being jumped over by our champion BMX visitor! The workshops were sensitively managed to inspire and extend proficient cyclists and support those who were not confident on a bike.

The staff meeting challenged us all and enabled opportunity for reflection and mindfulness, resulting in laughter and intuitive calm within the session and many staff thanking me afterwards for the experience overall. Highly recommended as an inspiring personal story and a welcome visitor to our school."

Debra Massey - Headteacher - Howe Dell School

"Thank you so much for the time you spent with the children at Richard Whittington, all the children who took part in the BMX session said it was the highlight of Sports Week!
It was amazing to see the progress in confidence and skill the children went through in just an hour. You nurtured the children who were afraid to ride without stabilisers and supported them so they could take part. By the end of the session, you could see how much more confident they had become.
For those children who were more confident, the session gave them so many opportunities to try new moves and skills and you structured it in such a way that, while feeling that the new skills were challenging and scary, the children were able to push themselves out of their comfort zone at the same time as feeling safe in doing so.
I also thought the assembly was really interesting and inspiring for both children and adults because it gave a very clear message: if you work hard enough at something and don't give up, then you can achieve great things.
I even shared your story as a great, positive message for my own children when I got home! I hope our paths cross again sometime soon."

Richard Hamlyn - Richard Whittington School

" Thanks for sharing such an inspirational story and teaching us to RISE ABOVE the obstacles in life and follow your dreams. Flearning forever!" Ian Y9

"I can now do things I could not do before today because you made me believe and try." Kelly Y5
"I just wanted to let you know the impact your visit had on one particular pupil.
You may remember him a year 6 child who did not have a bike and could not ride but by the end of your workshop had persevered, gained the confidence and was able to ride.
He came up to me with a big smile on his face a few days after you had visited saying I now have my own bike,  ( this is quite something for this child) I was so pleased for him, when I saw him after the following weekend he was telling me that he had been riding at a local orchard near his house and that a friend had been helping teach him road safety.
This is a young lad who had never had the opportunity or confidence to ride a bike and thanks to your workshop and his positive experience on two wheels he can now experience the fun and joys of riding a bike.
So thank you as without your input he may never have understood the joy of riding a bike."

Nicola Hayes
Marshland St James Primary

"Our boys found Mike truly inspiring on the two occasions when he spoke to them at our "Be the best you can be" events. He gave them plenty to think about, encouraging them to show courage when faced by a new challenge, to set themselves demanding targets, and to show resilience when things don't go according to plan - completely in tune with the mind-set we are wanting our pupils to develop. It was an unexpected bonus for the boys that they got to see Mike jumping over some of their teachers on his BMX!

We were also lucky enough to be able to arrange a BMX workshop day with Mike - the day was really well planned and executed with the boys being able to gradually build up their confidence on the bikes. By the end of each session, they were pulling off some really impressive tricks and stunts. Mike had an excellent manner with the boys, explaining everything clearly and ensuring that every single one of them left the workshop having felt they had pushed themselves outside their comfort zone."

Adam Jenkins, Lower School Housemaster, Abingdon School

"The workshop was an excellent means of reinforcing the growth mindset message in a way that the boys in particular found exciting and stimulating. It was great for them to meet a real person who had overcome difficulties and succeeded. The children could not believe it when Mike jumped over members of the staff on his bike!

I wanted the children to realise that persistence, resilience, perseverance and sacrifice are needed in any given situation, even for those where it looks on the surface that it might be an easy thing to do because it is fun – such as BMX riding. The day met all the learning objectives.

The children really hooked into the buzz words – “FLEARNING” and “RISE ABOVE” are still being used in the school long after the visit.
The children loved the day; the assembly had everybody enthralled – staff and children alike. It left us all feeling motivated and ready to take on the world!"

Shirley Arnold - Headteacher - St Andrews CE Primary School

"It was really challenging, but really fun! You really inspired me to not be afraid of failure and to FLEARN from each mistake until I get it."
Sam Y6
"I came in laughing in my mind, thinking I wouldn't be able to do this. I ended up achieving a lot, learning loads of cool tricks. Above all, you believed in me and that helped me have the confidence to challenge myself to do what I thought was impossible for me" Shania Y5
"Mike was a true gentleman and an extraordinary speaker. He really inspired the students and I have had outstanding feedback from every member of staff involved.
You are never quite sure what you are going to get when an outside speaker turns up! Sometimes it turns into a bit of a disaster. However I have to say Mike is the most talented speaker I have worked with in 25 years of teaching.
He held their attention for 50 minutes in assembly, but knew exactly when to call a halt and get them out to their groups. He was very clever in the way he filtered relevant ideas in during the assembly, but he did not overload them with information.
Mike was in no hurry to leave and stayed on into the lunch hour to talk BMX with a group who are involved, again this was a genuine interest.
As far as I am concerned he should not change anything, he is clearly personable and self-reflective and that illustrates his full commitment to the cause.
I strongly believe students & staff will remember the day & it’s meaning for years. One of my best days on the job."

Geoff Harris - Head of Y8 Fairlingaye High School

"It's been a privilege to work with Mike for two years on a project to help Year 11 students achieve their full potential and manage exam stress.
The results have been fabulous, the growth in individuals confidence and engagement has been a pleasure to witness”.

Sam Hill - Moulton High School

"The workshops have literally changed the way I think. Loved it and now have loads of ways to stay calm and keep focused as I get ready for my exams." Amy Y11
"It was not an easy task to get pupils from reception through to year 6 interested and Mike absolutely achieved that. He has an excellent manner with the pupils - talking to them in a way that made them fell valued and answering their questions patiently and thoughtfully.
Mike made it very clear to the pupils that if you have a goal and really want to succeed you need to over come setbacks and work really hard, looking up to role models, using mentors and coaches, believing in yourself and never giving up.
One of the pupils in year 6 who had said that he was not particularly looking forward to Mike visiting because the pupil felt he was no good at/not interested in BMX, after Mike had left said how brilliant he was and that he can do the same as Mike to go for his own goal.  "

Lucy Hammond - All Saints Primary School

"The children were able to identify with the experiences that Mike spoke about and, in particular, they took away the importance of persevering in the face of difficulty and having a positive attitude (using the 'I CAN door) in order to achieve their dreams.  Mike's delivery was engaging and interesting, through the use of appropriate images/video in his presentation; BMX demonstrations; question opportunities for the children and inclusion of staff in demonstrating the techniques he was speaking about.

The presentation culminated in a larger-scale BMX demonstration outside in the playground.  The style of presentation ensured that all children were engaged; even our EYFS children, for whom it was only their second time sitting in an assembly, they stayed for the whole presentation!

Each class valued their time with Mike later on, to ask him questions, and he was keen to ensure each group had a good length of time with him.  The children and staff could immediately be heard quoting Mike's key messages to each other and they are all excited to continue with the programme in our school."

Emma Carson - Stanground St John's Primary School

" Mike really helped me to overcome my fear and get out of my comfort zone. Balancing on the stunt pegs was AWESOME! " Ronni Y7
"Mike, thanks for the amazing workshops you ran for us on Wednesday - the children and staff were really inspired by you.
We've adopted flearning into our classroom culture and I've already heard several children telling each other to go through the 'I CAN' door...brilliant!

Caroline Godfrey
St Edburgs CE Primary School

"I tried and tried but could not ride a bike. You helped me a lot and I kind of learned! Thanks you for one of the best days of my life. You inspire me and the class really enjoyed it"
Aleeza Y6
"Mike Mullen was a fantastic and inspiring speaker. He had the children eating out of his hands from the very beginning. He introduced himself in a fun way and talked about his life experiences which started from an early age therefore the children could relate. Throughout his whole talk, Mike explained that tasks and goals in life are hard to achieve but are all achievable if you don’t give up and take little steps towards the goal. He explained that we FLEARN as we go which has really stuck in our children’s minds and is now becoming part of our school’s vocabulary.
Members of Staff, at Laurel Lane, have also mentioned how great Mike was and how well he was able to engage and interact with all the children. There was a real buzz in the staff room about it all after the day. "

Hannah Parsons - Deputy Head - Laurel Lane Primary

" Life changing... I now tap in to my Inner Ninja when I'm having a bad day or things get difficult" Jacob Y8
"Just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for the assembly that you did for our children this morning. They were absolutely inspired and ready to take on the world today. I can honestly say that you pitched it perfectly and delivered your message so clearly to them all.
I've spent most of the day watching my Reception children try out their own tricks in the playground today!

We were genuinely impressed and felt it was a perfect way to end the year!
Thanks again for visiting, both children and staff loved it! "

Kate Lawless - PE Coordinator - Towers Infants School

"In 20 years of teaching, Mike's assembly was the best one I have seen delivered. The message was fantastic and the children got so much from it. We look forward to working more with him in the future"

James Yarnold - Assistant Principal - Khalsa Primary School

"Thanks so much for today’s session. It was fantastic to see them so engaged with the presentation and asking so many really good questions.  I have no doubt that the stories you told will have had a massive impact on some of these children.

However, it was even more fantastic to see them all participating in the practical session.  We have pushed them in so many ways and they have always risen to the challenge but, for some of them, this was the biggest challenge yet.  The presentation really encouraged them to have a go and take that final step and they were all amazing.  I am actually really proud of them."

Sarah Ferguson - Skillforce: Heroes in Schools Transforming Lives

" One year on from Mike's second visit to us I wanted to let you know that we feel his impact on the children has been really worthwhile and sustained well beyond the end of the official programme. We had an assembly last week in which we revisited some of our best moments from the programme and his visits and a few of the children have written mike a letter to tell him what they have been doing.

Once again a huge thank you to Mike for delivering it with a genuine humility and sensitivity that our children really related to."

Penny Bullough - Head of Waterside Primary School

"I have always opted to work with pupils who have low self-esteem or self-confidence as I genuinely believe in the impact sport can have improving their confidence and approach to life in general. Mike has certainly had the desired affect during these projects and has played a pivotal role in the development of these young students.
The pupils find his sessions fun and engaging but beyond that I have found him superb at actually delivering our key messages and helping pupils understand the reasoning behind each project. His practical BMX sessions are always very imaginative and the students often talk about them for months after. There was a real buzz among the group yesterday after Mike had left."

Adam Marsh - Head of PE - Fearnhill High School

"It was fantastic having Mike in and he was brilliant with the children.
Mike spoke about his life, what his 3 key messages were and how the children can achieve their dreams. It was nice to for children to see that even though he's a champion, he struggled with PE in school. He apealed to the non-sporty children because he had asthma and didn't find sport easy. But he clearly showed if you wanted something then anything is possible. The fact that Mike brought his bike and showed us stunts really captivated our children.
Mike was brilliant, the children and staff were inspired by him and his messages."

Alice Young - Bentley CEVC Primary School

"Mike has an excellent manner with all those he teaches and is able to make the BMX workshops fun whilst also improving the skills of the riders no matter what their ability. Mike uses a variety of activities to motivate riders through jumps, tricks, games and races. He has certainly inspired our pupils & we all look forward to working with Mike again."

Ben Jeffery - Head of PE Hardwick Middle School

"On behalf of the staff and children at Eastwick, I wanted to say a massive THANK YOU for todays launch event. You were everything we could have hoped for and more.

Some comments made to me today ...
Mike is awesome!
What a lovely man who sent such powerful messages to our children.
Inspirational.
I want to be like Mike when I grow up.
That was the best day ever!
I want to be the best I can be.

It was an absolute pleasure meeting you. The buzz around the school was electric and I need you to come back so I can improve on my trick!"

Mrs Kareen OBrien- Head - Eastwick Infants & Junior School

"Thank you so much for your brilliant visit to our school.  I know that all the children thoroughly enjoyed your assembly - it was honest and inspiring. They all came away buzzing. I was teaching all day and we kept referring to your "I can" door and Flearning!  Absolutely incredible ideas.

The most memorable part of your visit was the inspiration that you provided to our child in a wheelchair who came back determined to learn some new wheelchair skills.  The Y5 and Y6 children have all put a BMX bike on their Christmas list and said it was the best day ever in their whole school life.

So thank you so much Mike - it really was the best thing we have ever had - to end the term on such a high was utterly delightful.  There was so much energy and happiness coming from all the children. We will definitely book you again”.

Ms D A Fenn - Head Teacher  - St Andrew's C of E (VA) Primary School

"Mike has a very calm, professional manner with the children, responded well to the children's numerous questions and wasn't even flustered when an ICT glitch on our behalf meant that his presentation had to go ahead without sound.

We managed to get the whole school (252 pupils and 26 staff) out onto the playground for a demo of tricks and that really captured the imagination of the children. If we were left in any doubt as to whether the experience would be memorable, Mike not only invited a teacher to learn how to do one of his tricks, but he also laid 4 teachers (one being me!) down on the playground and jumped over us on his bike! That REALLY ignited the pupils attention.

Mike was excellent from the first phone call in order to plan and prepare the day. The messages of perseverance, over-coming challenges and positive thinking were made and made well"

Rachel Bailey - Abbots Hall Primary

"We have since used Mike's visit in all subject areas and also in encouraging children to step out of their comfort zones to take on even greater challenges than they thought possible"

Lennie Haslam - St Peters & St Pauls Primary

"Best visitor we've had in years at Combs Ford Primary. The most inspirational assembly in my 15 years of teaching!"

Mrs Lee - Combs Ford Primary School

" Please could you share this email with the BMX man who came in today and shared his story and stunts with the children. Also I’d like to say a big thank you to the school for arranging the visit.

My son, Luke, is 7 and has hypermobile joints, low muscle tone and was late to walk. He struggled to keep up with other children, was forever falling over and getting left behind, much to his frustration.

When it came to riding a bike, it took Luke years to learn to push the pedals around with stabilisers on. Seeing much younger children able to ride on two wheels certainly dented his pride. He finally managed to get the hang of pedalling last year. However, after the struggle, he didn’t really enjoy riding his bike and was extremely reluctant to use it. At the suggestion of removing the stabilisers, he would become almost hysterical.

Tonight, out of the blue when my partner came home, he asked to go out on his bike. This was much to our surprise. I gently asked him about the stabilisers and he agreed we could take them off, which was an even bigger surprise. We took him out and held on to him,one either side. All of a sudden, this fierce determination came over him and he told me to let go! He rode his bike by himself!

I can’t tell you how delighted and amazed we all were. After taking years to push the pedals around, we were prepared to practice with him for weeks, months or as long as it took. In the end it took one hour.

It wasn’t until we were in the bath tonight that he told me about the man who came in on his BMX and did tricks, jumping over teachers! Luke said to me:
That man telling me his story Mum, made me want to do it and I believed I could, so I tried.

Thank you!
